How a Design Project Evolves: A Case Study Using My Business Card

Design is not about creating a perfect version on the first attempt. What we usually see in senior designers’ portfolios is often the result of multiple revisions, experiments, and iterations. That’s why it’s so valuable to show how real design growth happens — using practical examples.

Here are two stages of my business card design. Both versions served their purpose — at their time. Each of them reflects a different point in my design journey.

Version One — Artistic Experiment

This was my very first version. The main idea: highlight the artistic nature of my work. That’s why:

  • The typography features patterns inspired by my digital artworks.
  • Minimal amount of text.
  • The "sophie" logotype takes center stage as the brand’s core element.
  • The QR code is embedded directly into the logo as part of the playful composition.
  • Full freedom of color usage.

This was a pure form of experimentation — testing proportions, visual balance, and how the logo could "breathe" on its own.

Version Two — Functional Clarity

The second version came at a more mature stage of building my brand. This time:

  • Clear separation between the logo and informational content.
  • A dedicated, easy-to-scan QR code section.
  • Clear description of my service offer.
  • More neutral and calming color palette.
  • Subtle color highlights to emphasize key messages.
  • Consistent with the overall visual identity of my brand.

At this point, it was not just about "a nice card" — it became a functional tool for networking and presenting my work.

Takeaway for Junior Designers

Don’t be afraid to revisit your own projects.
Every version teaches you something — composition, hierarchy, typography.
Experimentation is necessary — even if it leads to conscious simplification later on.

One of the most valuable skills a designer can develop is reflection: what would I do better, looking at this project a few months later? That’s how real growth happens.
