Project type: Brand strategy, visual identity, brand book
Role: Solo — brand strategist, art director, designer
Deliverable: 209-page brand book
Tools: ChatGPT (research & strategy), Affinity Designer (layout & composition), AI image generation (brand photography & illustration)
Financial institutions communicate using the language of transparency, simplicity and trust — yet the customer experience often tells a different story.
Important information may be technically available while remaining difficult to find, interpret or connect to its consequences. A fee can be disclosed without being anticipated. A condition can exist in a contract without being understood. A negative decision can be technically correct while remaining impossible for the customer to interpret.
The strategic problem behind Novaro is a single question:
Why should understanding be harder than the decision itself?
I led the entire process from first principles to finished brand book — independently.
This included:
AI tools were used as part of the workflow: ChatGPT for competitive research and strategic structuring, AI image generation for brand photography and illustrations. All strategic decisions, visual decisions and design judgements were mine.
Novaro is built around one idea that most financial brands avoid making explicit:
Complexity ≠ Confusion
Some financial matters are inherently complex. Risk is complex. Regulation is complex. Long-term financial decisions involve uncertainty. Pretending otherwise creates a different form of dishonesty.
But confusion — unnecessary confusion — is often created by poor information hierarchy, unexplained terminology, hidden consequences and communication that arrives too late.
Novaro does not promise to simplify finance.
It exists to make what matters easier to understand.
Brand Purpose
To reduce unnecessary confusion around decisions that affect people's money.
Brand Promise
Make what matters easier to understand before customers need to discover it the hard way.
This promise creates a behavioural obligation, not just an advertising line. Every product, experience and communication touchpoint must be traceable back to it.
The visual system follows the same logic as the brand philosophy: start with what is essential, add complexity only when it adds meaning.
The identity is built from four core elements:
These elements are the vocabulary of the system. The logo is not the starting point — it is one result of it.
The Novaro wordmark is constructed from these elements according to a documented modular grid. Each letterform is built, not selected from a typeface. The construction logic is intentionally visible — proportion, stroke weight, gaps and curves are all governed by a single base unit (U).
This was a deliberate decision: a brand built around making things understandable should have an identity that visibly demonstrates how it is made.
Logo variations include primary wordmark, reversed version, horizontal lockup and icon mark — all derived from the same construction logic.
The palette is built around depth, contrast and distinction — not conventional banking colour associations.

Colour serves hierarchy, not decoration. The strongest contrast signals the most important information. Expressive colours create distinction. Neutrals give the system room.
Two typefaces with distinct roles:
The typographic principle mirrors the brand principle: hierarchy through scale, weight and spacing — not through excessive variation.
The 209-page brand book covers:
Most financial brands use colour as a shortcut to trust — blue for stability, green for security. Familiarity alone does not create distinction. Novaro's palette is built to create a recognisable visual environment that reflects the brand philosophy rather than relying on category convention.
A brand built around understanding should demonstrate its own construction. A wordmark that is visibly built — not typed — communicates the same principle that runs through the entire identity: things should show how they work.
In a financial context, information competes for attention. Space is not emptiness — it is the mechanism that makes distinction possible. This connects directly to the brand philosophy: without hierarchy, everything appears equally important, and the customer cannot identify what matters.
Geist carries brand expression at scale. IBM Plex was designed for information density and digital products — exactly the environment where Novaro must perform. IBM Plex Mono provides precision for data contexts. The architecture separates brand voice from functional communication, which is critical in a product where both must coexist.
Novaro is a brand concept developed as a portfolio project.
